While most Americans are somewhat familiar with public service broadcasters PBS and NPR, very few know anything at all about their European counterpart, EBU – the European Broadcasting Union. Comparing and contrasting how public service media (PSM) are defined and funded here and in Europe is worth considering to better understand how weak and marginalized PSM are in the U.S.
